Apex Legends’ new Shadow Society Event is now live, granting players access to a new set of premium cosmetics that give the game’s characters and weapons a spy-approved makeover. With 36 cosmetic items available for purchase (and several that can be earned for free), the Shadow Society Event marks the second time Respawn has introduced a deathbox cosmetic and universal melee weapon (the first being January’s collaboration with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth).

Cosmetics include super-spy skins for Lifeline, Ballistic, and Crypto, among others, a new universal Heirloom Weapon that can be wielded by all legends, the second deathbox cosmetic in Apex Legends history: the Cobal Deathbox. Keep reading for a closer look at each cosmetic in the collection, info on how to obtain it, and details on exactly how much the Cobalt Katar Apex Artifact and and elusive Cobalt Deathbox will cost you.

Similar to previous in-game events, Apex’s new Shadow Society Event features a collection of cosmetics that can only be unlocked by purchasing and opening Event Packs, special Apex Packs that are guaranteed to unlock one random item from the event’s loot pool. But unlike previous Collection Events, it seems that Shadow Society Event Packs don’t have a static price. Your first Event Pack will be free (if you earn it from the Event Shop–more on that later), and the next Event Pack will only cost 100 Apex Coins ($1 USD). But as the number of Event Packs you open increases, so does their price. Below is a pricing list for the Shadow Society Event Packs. There are 36 Event Packs in total, but as mentioned above, players can get their first one for free from the event’s free Shadow Society Reward Shop.

  • 1 Event Pack opened: 100 Apex Coins or 1,650 Crafting Metals per pack
  • 2 – 6 Event Packs opened: 500 Apex Coins or 1,650 Crafting Metals per pack
  • 7 – 15 Event Packs opened: 700 Apex Coins or 1,650 Crafting Metals per pack
  • 16 – 35 Event Packs opened: 1,000 Apex Coins or 1,650 Crafting Metals per pack

Each Event Pack that players open also has a small chance of unlocking the Cobalt Katar, an Heirloom-like cosmetic melee weapon in the form of a large, glowing blue blade. Unlike most Heirlooms, the Cobalt Katar can be equipped by any Legend, but it’s unclear if the weapon will be added to the Mythic Store after the event ends, meaning players who wish to get their hands on the rare melee weapon may want to act fast. The only guaranteed way to unlock the Cobalt Katar is to start opening Event Packs and hope you get lucky. Some players may unlock it via their first Event Pack, while others may not gain access to it until they’ve unlocked their 36th pack.

But there’s an even rarer cosmetic item in the event’s loot pool: the Cobalt Deathbox. The second cosmetic of its kind to ever hit the game, this cosmetic gives players’ deathboxes a fearsome finish that matches the Cobalt Katar’s aesthetic. But unlike the Cobalt Katar, which unlocks at random, the Cobalt Deathbox can only be obtained by first unlocking all 36 cosmetic items in the collection, meaning it has a pretty hefty pricetag. All in all, the Cobalt Deathbox will set players back roughly $360 USD, depending how many event items players unlock with Apex Coins or craft with Crafting Metals before purchasing Shadow Society Event Packs.

On the bright side, players will also gain access to cosmetics called Milestone Rewards on their way to unlocking the pricey new deathbox. Milestone Rewards are additional rewards that can only be gained by unlocking a certain number of Event Packs.

Milestone Rewards

  • 5 Event Packs opened: Coin Purse weapon charm (Epic)
  • 10 Event Packs opened: Make It Rain universal holospray (Epic)
  • 30 Event Packs opened: Clear The Pipes Fuse emote (Legendary)
  • 36 Event Packs opened: Cobalt Deathbox (Mythic)

Like the Cobalt Katar, the Cobalt Deathbox may not be entering the in-game Mythic Store after the event, meaning that once the event ends, it could be gone for good. Until Respawn clarifies where these cosmetics are going after the event ends, players who have their eye on either of these two Mythic-tier items may want to unlock them while the event is still live.

Free Rewards

For players who aren’t looking to shell out lots of cash but still want to get in on the fashionable fun, a collection of free cosmetic items is also available via the Rewards Shop, where players can spend Reputation Points (earned by completing in-game challenges) and use them to unlock items of their choosing.
