Brutal Year For Game Developers Continues With Ubisoft Laying Off 100+ More People

Ubisoft is undergoing further restructuring that will result in additional layoffs. The company confirmed to GameSpot that it is eliminating 98 positions from its Canadian workforce, and 124 positions overall in its latest headcount reduction. 2023 has been a year marked by layoffs in the game development scene, and the trend is not stopping.

In a statement to GameSpot, a spokesperson for Ubisoft said “every team” inside Ubisoft has spent the past few months “exploring ways” to streamline its business–layoffs are part of that.

“In this context, today we announced that we are reorganizing our Canadian studios’ general and administrative functions and reducing headcount in Hybride (our VFX studio based in Montreal) and in our global IT team, which impacts 124 positions overall,” the company said. “These are not decisions taken lightly and we are providing comprehensive support for our colleagues who will be leaving Ubisoft during this transition. We also want to share our utmost gratitude and respect for their many contributions to the company. This restructuring does not affect our production teams.”

The 98 positions cut from Ubisoft’s teams in Canada represents 2% of the company’s workforce in the country.

Ubisoft’s Hybride team works on games and also productions like the Star Wars movies Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, as well as the Ari Aster movie Beau is Afraid and Amazon’s Jack Reacher TV series. Kotaku was first to report on the layoffs at Ubisoft.

In October, Ubisoft announced that it cut 1,000 jobs in the past year, bringing its total worldwide workforce down to 19,410. Ubisoft has said it is in the midst of a massive cost-reduction plan to help improve profitability and appease investors.

Many major gaming companies have cut staff in 2023, including Epic, EA, Amazon, Microsoft, and Embracer, with some estimates suggesting there have been more than 6,000 jobs lost in gaming so far in 2023.
